Curiosity drives my life and intersects with my painting. My early pieces of this series were thrilling when I found the early explorer Ernst Haeckel. His own curiosity that drove him to collect specimens from water and land all over the world, also had to be interpreted through his drawings. He would create vast ‘plates’ of disparate images that he would blend together into a majestic puzzle. Architects, designers, scientists and artists all over the world used his designs to his delight and still do today. To imagine that these things were once his thrilling moments of discovery is so much fun for me to interpret into my work.
In Warwicks bookstore in La Jolla, California, a book caught my eye, The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman. There were so many tidbits of info about them including this! When you hear a songbird, who can sing many different songs, harmonize with other birds and even sing two songs at once, they can do that because they have two sets of vocal cords. And the bones in their wings are hollow and architectural marvels. So a wing is included to remind me of these birds and our wish to fly!
